OONI is the Open Observatory for Network Interference and its aim is to collect high quality data using open methodologies, using Free and Open Source Software (FL/OSS) to share observations and data about the kind, methods and amount of surveillance and censorship in the world This is a human rights observation project for the Internet. OONI seeks to observe levels of surviellance, censorship, and networked discrimination by networked authoritarian power structures. The end goal of the OONI project is to collect data which shows an accurate representation of network interference on the Filternet we call the internet.

Chicago mixtape DJs Victoriouz and Twin have been joined by Power 92′s DJ Pharris and party host Moe Bey for a mixtape to celebrate the new Chicago scene. It isn’t a comprehensive mix, if such a thing is even possible—for example, west side rapper Bo Deal doesn’t make an appearance—but it is a focused and powerful introduction. There are 94 naturally occurring elements, from Hydrogen to Plutonium. Together they make up everything in the world. The stories of the elements are intimately connected to the stories of our own lives. Everything we use and create is made from them. Our own bodies are mostly made from just 6 of the elements. They affect our lives in countless ways, and their stories reveal our relationship with our resources and the patterns of our economies.

The project is creating a collection of unique human stories by award-winning filmmakers and the best emerging filmmaking talent about the endless ways the elements touch our daily lives. Each filmmaker will create an authored 4-7 minute film around a way we extract or use one element. The films are surprising and moving human stories involving the elements – this is not about science, but about our human relationships with our natural resources.

It makes the pictures we see across the web more mysterious and open to interpretation of our own imaginations.”
